We encourage all of you to bring in your dogs as soon as possible and have them tested for heartworms. We have diagnosed over 40 cases of heartworm positive dogs since January 1st, 2017. That number is extremely high compared to previous years. We are in a an area where heartworm disease is becoming increasingly active. The map shows popular areas for heartworm disease, and you will notice Tennessee is in a very popular area. Also, keep in mind this map is from 2013, as the numbers have only increased since the time it was created.
Dogs are infected with heartworms by being bitten by an infected mosquito. Once bitten, the dog can take up to six months or a year to show symptoms. After symptoms are shown, it can take over a year to get rid of the heartworms.
We are doing our very best to educate and inform our clients about the importance of the prevention of this disease. It could be in your backyards, it could find your dog on its daily walk, it could be at the neighbors house, or it could even find your dog on its way to the car to go for a ride. It is our job to help you help your pets! Please protect them today!
